Where Is the Secret Battle Star for Week Two Season 7
Like most Broadway actors, Alex Brightman—formerly Dewey Finn in School of Rock and currently starring as Beetlejuice in Beetlejuice—performs eight times a week. Evening performances at the Winter Garden Theater are Tuesday through Saturday and matinees are Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. It's a grind—but he does get his Monday.
Exactly why are most shows "dark" on this day? Mark Peikert, editor-in-chief of Playbill, points to the loosening of blue laws in the '70s when businesses were finally allowed to open on Sundays. So Monday became Broadway's day of rest. (Generally, a select few shows like Phantom of the Opera, Tootsie, Chicago, Betrayal and Waitress do perform on Monday.)
T&C talks with Brightman about how he spends his one day of freedom.
OPPOSITE DAY
I do nothing hyper-stimulating, especially with Beetlejuice. I just got a dog, His name is Kevin. I've been taking care of him which somehow gives me more permission to relax on my day off. I can nap for two hours and then walk him and it's totally Zen, the complete opposite of what I do at the Winter Garden. I really need to feel like it's a day off. I want to miss my show.

ICED COFFEE, STAGE LEFT
On Mondays I basically eat like an asshole. I can wake up around 8 a.m. and sometimes skip breakfast but I mobile order an iced coffee from Starbucks, which means I don't have to speak to anyone. For the last two months every day off I have gotten pico de gallo and guac and chips (from Noche Mexicano via Seamless, though I make an excellent pico) and eaten them all day long.
Basically on Monday I try to eat all the foods that would be terrible for me on a show day.
I basically sit in the clothes I was wearing the night before and eat chips until I can't fit any more of them in my mouth. I love Mexican food and I love sushi and I can't eat either on show days because the sodium swells my vocal cords. Basically on Monday I try to eat all the foods that would be terrible for me on a show day. At some point there will also be a margarita or a vodka soda at the bar with my friends.
MONDAYS START ON SUNDAY NIGHT
I cannot stress this enough. I do the stage door every night. On Sunday night I actually have the whole rest of the night to myself so it feels like an end of the week party at the stage door. I get myself home in some sort of fashion. And I get to see my wife. Sometimes we go out: The Mermaid Inn on Amsterdam is our spot. Every week. We had our rehearsal dinner there. I fixate on things. I don't change it up. We watch Jeopardy.
ENTER LAUGHING
If you really want to find me on Monday, break into my apartment. Before Beetlejuice I used to sometimes be found at the Empire City Casino in Yonkers. There are thousands of slot machines and digital poker. I loved arcades when I was younger and this is basically an adult arcade. I actually bought some of the Beetlejuice cast a few Sundays ago. We won!

EARLY TO RISE, OR SLEEP IN?
Early to rise no matter what.
GREEN JUICE, OR ORANGE?
Orange if those are the choices but actually cranberry with ice.
MORNING NEWS OR MORNING WORKOUT?
Morning news. I like the Broadway Briefing. I do walk my dog in the morning. Is that exercise?
TIME TO YOURSELF OR TIME WITH FRIENDS?
Time to myself.
SWEATS OR JEANS?
Sweats shorts. "Dad Chic" is my look, like I have eight kids and no time to dress myself.
Do you avoid THE THEATER DISTRICT ON MONDAY?
I love it actually. I'm totally in. I will happily see a show on my day off.

COOK OR TAKEOUT?
Takeout. I love to cook when I have time. I do a very good Mexican food across the board. Chicken enchiladas, or a pretty mean steak, even without a grill. I'm good at whipping up anything, but my day off is my day off.
BEAUTY APPOINTMENT OR APPOINTMENT TELEVISION?
ENT on a Monday. Vocal pathologist at a show. Voice lesson. Sometimes a massage. But those are easy enough to get on a show day.
HIGH CULTURE OR GUILTY PLEASURES?
Guilty pleasures with a capital G. I am many things, but I am not cultured. Or I should say, I'm as cultured as I want to be at this moment.
